Some people say that going on strike is the French's national sport! I think they are justified in this case. The students are protesting over a new law (CPE) recently passed which give big businesses a stranglehold over young new employees. At Paul Valery, my university, all classes were cancelled, with tables and chairs set outside barricading entrances to buildings... Pretty effective.
